Victory in NY: Healthcare Data Transparency Act Signed into Law
Power to the Patients released the following statement today in praise of New York Governor Kathy Hochul signing into law Legislation S.4097B/A.5817A, also known as the Healthcare Data Transparency Act, which directs the President of the Civil Service Commission to organize the collections of health care claims data to publish a New York State benefit plan hospital pricing report. The report will help to increase transparency and showcase health care expenses, trends, and variables that influence health care spending and hospital costs.
"We are happy to see New York take a major step toward a more fair, affordable, and accountable healthcare system. New York's sky-high increases in healthcare spending have taken money away from workers, families, and employers, and a greed-driven lack of transparency and data disclosure by hospitals is largely to blame for it. Thankfully much needed change is here. Hospitals throughout the Empire State will no longer be able to charge different amounts for the same services while keeping patients in the dark. New Yorkers will be empowered to compare prices, assess what is best for their families and employees, and enjoy the savings that new openness and competition will bring."
